Juilliard at Work is a professional development program under the auspices of Juilliard Extension. It draws on the creative arts and expertise of performing artists to help business professionals develop leadership, communication, and executive skills in new ways.

  • Brian McManamon

    Topic: Dramatic Techniques for  Effective Communication
    Led by actor, acting coach and Juilliard Extension drama faculty Brian McManamon 

    Brian McManamon is an actor, teacher, and acting coach based in New York City. He currently teaches acting at The Juilliard School Extension Division and advanced acting at Syracuse University’s Tepper Semester Program. In addition to running a private acting studio in New York City, McManamon has taught and/or directed at Juilliard, the National Theater Institute (NTI) at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Powerhouse Theater Training Program at Vassar College, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia University’s MFA Acting program and the Public Theater. From 2015 to 2018, McManamon served as artistic director of the Shakespeare Academy at Stratford. As an actor, McManamon has trained with some of the most respected teachers of acting in America and abroad including Ron Van Lieu, Evan Yionoulis, Mark Wing-Davey, Austin Pendleton, Peter Francis James and the late John Barton. He received a BFA in Acting from Boston University, an MFA in Acting from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale and was the recipient of a full scholarship to attend the Midsummer in Oxford program of the British American Drama Academy (B.A.D.A.) at Oxford University. McManamon is a proud member of the Actors Center Workshop Company and the National Alliance of Acting Teachers.

  • Mark Shapiro

    Topic: Leadership Development: How to Manage a Team Like an Expert  
    Led by conductor and Juilliard Extension faculty, Mark Shapiro

    Conductor emeritus and music director (2012–23) of the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra, Mark Shapiro is a conductor of orchestras, opera, and choruses with a broad and diverse repertoire. Shapiro is music director of the Cecilia Chorus of New York, artistic director of Cantori New York, and principal conductor of Marshall Opera. He has received four ASCAP awards for adventurous programming, two Alice Parker awards, and a Dale Warland Commission. He has conducted opera for American Opera Projects, Barnard College, Carolina Coast Chamber Festival, Center for Contemporary Opera, Hofstra University, Juilliard Vocal Arts, Opera Company of Middlebury, Rutgers University, and Underworld Opera at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Le poisson rouge, Rubin Museum, World Financial Center Arts & Events, Guggenheim Museum Works & Process, and the Roman amphitheater at Vaison-la-Romaine, France. Shapiro has guest conducted the Bridgeport Symphony and Nova Sinfonia at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. He has been featured on WQXR, WNYC, Sirius, and CBC and his albums are available on the Albany, Arsis, Newport Classics, and PGM labels. Shapiro’s recording of Frank Martin’s oratorio Le vin herbé and music for violin and orchestra with violinist Gregory Harrington and the Janáček Philharmonic was designated editor's choice for Opera News.

  • Noa Kageyama

    Topic: Peak Performance Mindset 
    Led by performance psychologist and Juilliard faculty Noa Kageyama 

    Performance psychologist Noa Kageyama is on the faculty at Juilliard and is the performance psychology coach for the New World Symphony. Kageyama has degrees from Oberlin (BA, psychology) and Juilliard (MM, violin performance) and studied with Stephen Clapp, Ronald Copes, Franco Gulli, Paul Kantor, Masao Kawasaki, Roland and Almita Vamos, and Donald Weilerstein before making the leap to psychology. He received his MS and PhD in counseling and counseling psychology from Indiana University.

    Kageyama specializes in teaching performing artists how to utilize sport psychology principles to more consistently demonstrate their full abilities under pressure. He has conducted workshops at institutions including Northwestern University, New England Conservatory, Peabody, Eastman, and the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music. He has taught at programs such as the Starling-DeLay Symposium, the Perlman Music Program, and the National Orchestral Institute, and for organizations like the Music Teachers’ National Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

    Kageyama has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Musical America, Strings magazine, Strad, and Lifehacker. He maintains a private coaching practice and writes a performance psychology blog, the Bulletproof Musician, which has more than 100,000 monthly readers.
